PortLev Buyer Map

Prepared for Yuri Kruman | PortLev | October 2026

As of Oct 10, 2026. Counts from federal adviser filings to October 1, 2026 and federal statistics on US businesses for 2022, described in the notes at the foot

This page counts, in the United States, the two buyers your contact page names. The first is the private equity firm, where an operating partner runs the value creation plan. The second is the company with 20 to 500 million dollars in revenue, where the CEO, COO, CFO or CHRO carries the AI mandate. It counts both from public federal data. No federal filing says which companies a fund owns, so the company counts cover every company in that revenue range, PE-backed or not, and nothing here says who already works with PortLev.

Private equity firms by size

US advisers registered with the SEC that report at least one private equity fund, by the gross assets of all the private funds they advise.

Assets cover every private fund the firm advises, so a firm that also runs credit or real estate funds sits higher here than its private equity funds alone would put it.

Companies by revenue and industry

US employer companies by the revenue of the whole company, 2022, in the industries with the most companies in your range.

Revenue in dollars. Industry names are our plain labels for the federal sectors in the notes. A company with locations in more than one sector is counted in each, so the rows add to more than Every industry, which counts each company once.

Who signs off

The roles your contact page names, and what each usually owns. At a smaller company one person can hold two of them.

What no public count reaches

Three things this page cannot size from public data, said in words rather than shown as numbers.

Which companies are PE-backed. Form ADV does not list a fund's holdings, so no federal register says which companies are PE-backed. The company rows above count every company in the range, and the PE-backed ones are found company by company in the named version.

How many companies each fund holds. Adviser filings count funds, and one fund can hold many companies, so your fewer than fifteen line cannot be read from a filing. Fund size is the nearest public guide.

The smallest sponsors. Many smaller private equity advisers file as exempt reporting advisers rather than registering. Almost all of that list reports under 250 million dollars in private fund assets, so it is left out of every count here and screened by name in the named version.

Three openings

Where the counts point.

The smaller sponsors.

About 1,300 of these firms advise under 1 billion dollars across all their private funds. Your own article puts the line for a full-time AI operating partner at about fifteen portfolio companies. Filings do not count portfolio companies, so fund size is a guide here, not a count of firms under that line.

Five states.

About 65 in every 100 of the registered firms have their main office in New York, California, Texas, Florida or Illinois, and New York alone holds about 740.

Wholesale trade first.

Wholesale trade has the most companies in your revenue range, about 32,000 with a wholesale location and 20 to 499 million dollars in revenue. Retail trade (about 24,000) and manufacturing (about 20,000) come next. A company with locations in two sectors counts in both.

Denominators, definitions and sources

  1. Private equity firms are investment advisers registered with the SEC whose latest Form ADV reports at least one private equity fund and whose main office is in the United States, from the SEC's monthly adviser data released October 2026, filings to October 1, 2026. Assets are the gross assets of all private funds the adviser reports, as each adviser last reported them, for most at the end of 2025. Exempt reporting advisers are not counted, and 84 advisers with no main office address in the file are not counted.
  2. Companies are employer firms in the federal annual statistics of US businesses, 2022, by the receipts of the whole enterprise. A firm is every location under one owner. Sectors: 42 wholesale trade; 44-45 retail trade; 23 construction; 31-33 manufacturing; 54 professional, scientific and technical services; 62 health care and social assistance; 56 administrative and support and waste management; 52 finance and insurance; 48-49 transportation and warehousing. Sector 55, holding and head-office companies, is in every industry but not shown as a row.
  3. Built from public federal data, counts banded deliberately. Figures of 100 and over are rounded to two significant figures, figures from 10 to 99 to the nearest ten, and figures below 10 are shown as under 10.

The named version of this page, the actual firms and companies inside a row, is built one row at a time. If you want to walk through a row together, pick a time at cal.com/ecg. Prepared by Ben Beattie, ben@enquirerconsulting.com.
